Travel destinations in Chennai

Chennai is a metropolitan city located towards the southern part of India. It is a cultural city with an array of activities including cultural, religious, historic sites, museums, beaches, gardens and parks, amusements and its pleasing crowd with simple lifestyle providing lot of counters for best currency exchange in Chennai.

Places

Mahabalipuram – also called Mamallapuram is an Ancient Historic town of the Tamil Nadu district in South India. The monuments at Mamallapuram has been categorised as part of UNESCO World Heritage Site. The rock-cut shelters and temples, the giant open-air rock respites (descent of the Ganges), thousands of sculptures of God Shiva, the shore temple, the PanchaRathas etc. indicates the glorious tradition of ancient India.A view through the site confirms the embodiment of monolithic Dravidian architecture of the 7th& 8th centuries.

Muttukadu – An appealing backwaters of the Bay of Bengal with a bamboo boat house and a floating boat jetty providing facilities for water skiing, wind surfing, speed boat riding, rowing and power boating by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Development Corporation enabling access to large number of domestic and international travellers.

Marina Beach – One of the world’s longest sandy beaches along the Bay of Bengal in the city of Chennai, Tamil Nadu .A natural urban beach stretching from Fort St George in the north to Foreshore estate in the south.

Elliot’s Beach – popularly known as ‘Besant Nagar beach or Bessie’ is located towards the end point of Marina beach shore.The Velankanni Church (AnnaiVelankanni Shrine) and the AshtalakshmiKovil nearby are pilgrimage sites. The night view of the Elliot beach is mesmerising.

Fort St. George - The first British fortress in India, historically called the white town was also the busy trading centre of the British. The fort currently accommodates the Tamil Nadu legislative assembly and other official structures. 

Museums, Galleries, Parks Educational & Amusements

Government Museum – The second oldest museum in India with the biggest collection of Roman Antique outside Europe. Rich in archaeological and numismatic collections, it also houses some rare artistic works of Raja Ravi Varma. It also has the National Art gallery and the colossal museum theatre. It is also called the Madras museum.

Railway Museum – A rich rail heritage museum and integral coach factory at Villuvakkam, Chennai.

Arignar Anna Zoological Park – A zoological garden located in Vandalur and also called the Vandalur Zoo.

Guindy National Park– one of thesmallest National Parks of India and one of the national parks situated inside a city, a very rare scene.

Guindy Snake Park – also called the Chennai Snake Park, a Family - friendly Park hosting a large variety of snakes and crocodiles.

The National Art Gallery, Anna Centenary Library, MGR Memorial, Birla Planetarium, 

MGM Dizzi world and Queens Land are some of the other places of interest.

Religious Places

Kapaleeshwar Temple – Temple of Shiva located at Mylapore, Chennai.

San Thome Church – A Roman Catholic minor Bascilica located in the city of Chennai. Built by Portugese in the 16th century as a memorial of Saint Thomas, one of the twelve disciples of Jesus.

Sri Parthasarathy Temple - a Hindu Vaishnavite temple of the eighth century dedicated to God Krishna. The temple is located at Triplicane, Chennai.

Thousand Lights Mosque – one of the largest multi-domed mosque in India, located at Anna Salai in Chennai. Its architecture and style are very impressive.

Shirdi Sai baba temple – a temple located close to Mylapore in Chennai, India. It is dedicated to the Indian saint Sai Baba of Shirdi who promoted a religion of love with peace and harmony.

St Thomas Mount – A small hillock close to Guindy and Chennai International airport. St. Thomas the Apostle is believed to have been tortured and killed in St. Thomas Mount.
